Every Hand Revealed – A Tournament Story by Gus Hansen
This blog does not necessarily provide book reviews, but I just finished a great poker book called, 'Every Hand Revealed' by professional poker player Gus Hansen. Before I started reading it I thought to myself, 'Why would anyone publish a book revealing their every thought and strategy?' Well, no worries, no hand is ever the same and every tournament plays out completely differently. With over 300 hands played, it's not like you will be able to memorize every thought and corresponding move, even though I gave it my best shot.
The tournament was the 2007 Aussie Millions and even though as the reader, you know what the outcome will be, I found myself wondering at certain points in the book, just how he was going to pull it off. But he did, and with his trusty little tape recorder and excellent note taking, he catalogued nearly every hand as he made his way to the final table.

For those novice poker players out there that dream of entering the big tournaments and some day finding the fortune (and maybe fame) of winning the big one, this book is a great way to learn more about what it takes to play in a tournament of that caliber. As Gus documents each hand, the reader is provided with the blind and ante amounts, his position at the table, his holding, and the size of his stack. Each hand is played out and accompanied by theory and strategy discussions, along with a good dose of what it is like to have to try and determine the percentage of winning any given hand as you are sitting at the table. When he messes up, he admits it and admonishes his poker behavior just like any of us do when we make a play that doesn't add up or shouldn't have been considered in the first place.

After the preface written by David 'Chip' Reese, the book is broken into each day of the tournament, with Gus' advice before play and then a short recap after the day's play. When Gus gets down to the final table, it is from seven players to three, then three-handed play, then finally, the head's up match. The final chapters include stats and tips and then Gus' afterthoughts. After reading the entire book, I found it extremely interesting to go over the stats of the entire tournament as there were so many hands that he won with really bad cards, only because he was aggressive and not afraid to take a risk when his opponents were more in the mode of protecting their stacks. Additionally, you can see with your own eyes just how advantageous it is to defend your blinds and how continually stealing blinds can turn you into the chip leader quite quickly, if you can recognize the opportunity when it presents itself.
